Special Cycle “Children’s Concert” – Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev

The Washington Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Jun Kim will perform Sergei Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf” on Sunday April 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm at The Sherwood Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax VA 22030.  Narrators are Marsha Kelly and Jean Mulherin of the Irish group Síor-Óg. “Peter and the Wolf” is a musical fairy tale for children with Peter, his grandfather and various woodland creatures all of whom are represented by the different musical instruments. After many interactions and plot twists, the story has a happy ending thanks to the heroic Peter.  Opening the concert will be Rachel Choe, principal flutist of WCO with Vivaldi’s delightful “Il Gardellino.” Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students under 18 and free for children under 12.  Tickets at the door or at the WCO web site www.thewco.org. The concert is sponsored by the City of Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Festival and made possible by a grant from the City’s Commission on the Arts.

The WCO was formed in 2014 with the express purpose of being an ambassador for classical music “making classical music more accessible to everyone without compromising musical excellence”.  WCO’s artistic director, Jun Kim, is the winner of numerous international conducting prizes. Mr. Kim has conducted extensively in America and Europe. His conducting as been described as “...emotions spilled wonderfully over into a performance…”

Ms Choe, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Peabody Institute, has been critically acclaimed by The Baltimore Sun as “a musician of the most propulsive of lines in deftly synchronized fashion.”  She has performed in celebrated venues in America, Europe and Asia and is on the faculty of Peabody Institute.
