View Fairfax Boulevard in 3D
You can now view portions of Fairfax Boulevard in 3D thanks to a cooperative effort between the City of Fairfax Community Development and Planning Department (CDP) and Google Earth. This new tool will help the city better plan for the future and visualize current conditions on the Fairfax Boulevard corridor.
CDP created photo textured 3D buildings in three areas along the boulevard where future development is anticipated: Northfax, Kamp Washington and Fairfax Circle.
To view the 3D models, download Google Earth, a free viewer available at www.Google.com/earth. Once in Google Earth, type "Fairfax, VA" in the search window and zoom in. (Make sure the 3D Buildings folder in the Layers panel is checked.)
The creation of these 3D models was part of a project completed by a planning intern with guidance from city staff. Starting with the city’s geographic information systems (GIS) data of the building footprints as a base, a 3D program called SketchUp was used to extrude the footprints to the approximate building heights to make a 3D frame of each structure. The intern then visited each area to photograph the buildings on every side to add images to the 3D frames.
Each building is available for individual viewing and download through the 3D Warehouse website (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/); search for “FairfaxCDP” to see all of the city models uploaded to date.
