The Old Town Fairfax Facade Improvement Program 2016-2017
The Old Town Fairfax Facade Improvement Program is an initiative of the Fairfax City Economic Development Authority (EDA) and the City of Fairfax Economic Development Office (EDO). The grant provides financial assistance to commercial property owners and business owners located in the historic downtown and transition district of Fairfax City for eligible façade improvements.
The Old Town Fairfax Facade Improvement Program provides for a one-time reimbursement of up to $10,000 per project for eligible improvements. Applicants are eligible for a 50 percent reimbursement on expenses equal to or less than $10,000. For projects greater than $10,000.01, the city will reimburse the application up to 20 percent of eligible expenses. The maximum award amount is $10,000 per business or property regardless of the total value of the project. The application must be submitted and approved, and a grant agreement must be entered into with the Economic Development Authority PRIOR to work commencing (see program guidelines located in the application.)
The Old Town Fairfax Façade Improvement Project aims to:
- Provide financial assistance to commercial property owners and businesses in downtown Fairfax;
- Support the revitalization of the city’s downtown by creating a more attractive commercial core;
- Stimulate private investment in high-quality improvements that enhance the appearance of buildings and properties
To be considered for the program, applicants must:
- Be located in Old Town Historic District,
or Transition District.
Employ fewer than 100 individuals.
- Own or lease commercial property.
Eligible improvements include (but are not limited to) signage and decorative awnings, minor decorative landscaping, exterior wall lighting, exterior paintings or surface treatment, window and door modifications, decorative post lighting, professional services fees, storefront framing and glass replacement, cornice modifications, and improvements to increase accessibility.
Applications will be reviewed by the Facade Improvement Selection Committee. All applications are subject to the review of the Fairfax City Board of Architectural Review. The Committee or the City's Director of Economic Development may request additional information from all applicants. Failure to provide timely requested information may deem an applicant ineligible for participation in the program.
Applications are due on January 31, 2017. However, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. The EDA in partnership with the EDO is happy to respond to any inquires in advance of submission. However, once an application has been submitted, and after the January 31st deadline, the EDA and EDO will be unable to answer any questions until the recipients are announced.
