On January 19, 2015 the City of Fairfax Commission for Women co-sponsored a day of service program, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at City Hall with Girls Inspired and Ready to Lead, Inc. (GIRL) and its Founder and Director Danielle Blunt. The Commission provided lunch for all attendees. The event was well attended with 120 attendees both young girls, as well as women from Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Jack & Jill Burke-Fairfax Chapter, Greater Little Zion Baptist Church Youth Ministry, National Council Of Negro Women Fairfax Chapter, and the Alpha Phi Omega--A Chapter, George Mason University. The speakers at the event were Danielle Blunt, Deepa Patel, Consultant and Program Director at the Multicultural Clinical Center in Springfield, Virginia and Kyra Beckman, a student at West Springfield High School who began a group “Spartans against Trafficking”. After the presentations, the girls broke into groups to write notes of support and encouragement to victims of trafficking and to assemble care packages for victims of trafficking in Fairfax County. The Commission was honored to have Councilmember Janice Miller attend the event.
