Inclement Weather Cancellations

The City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department follows the Fairfax County School’s cancellation policy. When schools are closed due to inclement weather, all recreation classes, activities and the Senior Center will be cancelled. All facilities where these programs are held will only be open for administration purposes—Sherwood Community, Green Acres Center, Senior Center and Old Town Hall, unless otherwise directed by the City Manager. Website for Fairfax County school information: www.fcps.edu.

Late Start

When Fairfax County Schools are delayed for one to two hours, classes and activities will start at 10:30am— all classes with start times prior to 10:30am will be cancelled.

Early Dismissal

When Fairfax County Schools initiate an early school closing or cancellation of evening school activities, all afternoon and evening Parks and Recreation classes starting after 2:00pm operating out of Sherwood Community Center, Green Acres Center, Old Town Hall, city parks or schools will be cancelled, including the Senior Center.

In the event of inclement weather during a time when public schools are not in session (weekends, holidays, etc.), the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department will make a decision on cancellations. This information will be posted on the website, www.fairfaxva.gov or call 703-385-7858. Staff will make all efforts to call/email participants to inform them of any cancellations. This policy is subject to change if weather conditions prohibit safe access to city facilities. The Parks and Recreation Director or City Manager makes this decision. Notices of closings and delays/ cancellations will be posted on the city website www.fairfaxva.gov, local news channels, as well as notifications by E-mas, ActiveNet e-mails and, where appropriate, phone calls. Parks and Recreation Staff will make all efforts to make-up any missed classes due to inclement weather, and refunds will be given if this is not possible.
