Fairfax City Introduces New Outdoor Eating Experience - City Square!
Outdoor seating opens Wednesday, July 1
As the commonwealth’s Forward Virginia plan for reopening businesses progresses, restaurants are slowly increasing their indoor dining capacity. However, some diners may still feel more comfortable eating outdoors during this time. To help restaurants navigate these challenging times and to provide diners with an alternative to grab-and-go meals, the City of Fairfax and the Fairfax City Economic Development Authority are launching a new street-side dining concept in Old Town Fairfax called City Square on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.
City Square will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily throughout the summer and consists of two locations, with a total of six outdoor seating areas along University Drive and Main Street. Four of the outdoor dining areas are reserved for specific restaurants, and the other two are open to anyone who orders a takeaway meal from an Old Town Fairfax eatery. The two City Square locations were strategically selected to ensure that customers will continue to be able to access non-restaurant sector businesses and their associated parking areas.
This effort to reconnect city residents with the restaurants they love is supported by numerous city departments and the Old Town Fairfax Business Association. Working together, they will help ensure the health and safety of the dining areas, with appropriately spaced tables, timely removal of refuse, street-sweeping, and sanitization of surfaces. To further ensure the safety of restaurant patrons and staff, concrete barriers will be placed at head-on traffic locations and spaced throughout the interior to allow emergency services access if needed.
To create a uniform look throughout City Square, dining fixtures are provided by the Fairfax City. The material and planning for this program are funded by the city’s allocation of federal CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Funding.
