Update to 3/3/18 News Release
Follow-up Information Regarding the School Threats Case
Fairfax City, VA, March 4, 2018, City of Fairfax Police understand that there are concerns in the community about the recent press release related to the search for suspect, Mr. Ishmael O’Brien Lionel Harrison.
Here are some answers from City of Fairfax Police Chief Carl Pardiny:
Q: The suspect is listed as armed and dangerous. What changed from initial statements on Feb. 22 about the threat being mitigated to now?
A: We identified and isolated the source of the threats early in the investigation. Harrison was one of several potential individuals who were investigated. We conducted interviews and found no evidence of firearms at that time. Initially, the suspect cooperated with police.
We enhanced security at Fairfax High School and all other city schools, which we continue to do. As the investigation continued, we obtained new information that provided probable cause to secure search-and-arrest warrants for Mr. Harrison. Upon executing the search warrant on Friday, March 2, we found rifle ammunition at this residence.
With that new information, combined with the fact that he threatened harm to police and others, and he is evading arrest, we consider him armed and dangerous. We do not want the community or the police to nonchalantly approach him. He is actively evading arrest, and he threatened to harm police. We are appealing to Mr. Harrison, and those who know his whereabouts, to turn himself in so we can resolve this case.
Q: Are you working with federal, state and local law-enforcement officials to apprehend the suspect?
Q: Given how the nature of this case has changed, how safe are the City’s schools?
A: First, Fairfax High School has been a strong partner in this investigation. The police department has and will continue to provide enhanced police presence at all of our city schools. FCPS Office of Safety and Security is an effective partner, and they are committed to the safety of students, faculty, staff and parents. Should anyone see or know of Mr. Harrison’s whereabouts, please call the police.
Q: Where can I get more information about this investigation?
A: Any new information regarding this case will be posted on the City’s Facebook and Twitter @FairfaxCityPD pages: https://www.facebook.com/CityOfFairfaxPoliceDepartment
