Post Date:11/27/2018 3:48 PM

City Manager Robert A StalzerThere are many things that excite Robert Stalzer about his new role as city manager for the City of Fairfax, but the long-time local-government executive says near the top of the list is getting to know and work with people in the small, tight-knit community.

Stalzer, who has been the deputy county executive for Fairfax County for the past 18 years, including the deputy for public safety, planning and development (2000-2012) and the deputy for planning and development (2012-present), notes that being in a small municipality has a big upside.

"You get to know the neighborhoods, the businesses, the students, the civic leaders and scores of volunteers — and you can hear their needs and work with our team in city hall and the mayor and city council toward making an impact on their daily lives," says Stalzer, who has also been the Herndon town manager (1988-2000). "Fairfax City has an incredible reputation in the region for its small-city feel with award-winning parks, services and a vibrant business sector — and it's home to the largest university in the Commonwealth, George Mason. I can't wait to help make this an even better place to live, work and do business."

City of Fairfax Mayor David Meyer notes that Stalzer's impressive track record includes revitalizing and energizing downtown districts. "Rob has proven that, when it comes to economic development, he is, above all, an innovator," says Meyer. "He's done groundbreaking work with public-private partnerships and has spearheaded efforts that have made Fairfax County an economic driver for Northern Virginia. We're excited about the vast talent and experience he brings to our city."

Stalzer has an M.B.A. from Syracuse University, a master’s degree in Regional and City Planning (MRCP) from the University of Oklahoma and a B.A. from Clark University. He is a graduate of the Senior Executive Institute of the University of Virginia and is certified by the International Coach Federation as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC).

Stalzer is a Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM) and a member of the International City/County Management Association, the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and a past president of the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA). Mr Stalzer was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) in April 2016. He was inducted as a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration in November 2017.

Stalzer will begin his tenure on January 7, 2019.
