Winter Weather Tip: Clear Sidewalks for Safe Pedestrian Travel

Post Date:02/18/2019 10:40 AM

As temperatures drop and snow and ice fall on sidewalks, residents and business owners are reminded about the importance of clearing sidewalks and walkways for pedestrians — especially students who walk to school or the bus stop after the most recent snowfall.

Please clear snow and ice promptly from sidewalks and walkways, and to use ice “busters” to keep pedestrian areas safe for foot traffic. Even though the city does not have a law requiring property owners to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, such practices are encouraged: safe access to school and bus stops are essential for public safety.

Even on days when school is not in session, these efforts will keep walkways safe for family, friends, customers — and grateful pedestrians you may never meet. And never underestimate how sidewalk safety could affect school opening schedules.

Be a good neighbor and help others around you who are unable to clear the snow from their sidewalks. (Also, be sure to check on them and give them a hand with other issues if you are able.)

Once the area has been cleared, please check regularly for slick areas on walkways caused by subsequent melting and re-freezing, or ice and snow falling from vehicles or nearby vegetation.
