Old Town Fairfax Sidewalk Spot-Widening Project Design Begins; Preliminary Plans Anticipated in Spring 2020
To provide a more comfortable walking experience in Old Town Fairfax, the city plans to widen existing sidewalks in two locations selected by City Council on September 3, 2019.
- Old Lee Highway (west side, north of Main Street)
- Chain Bridge Road (east side, between North Street and Main Street)
The project will widen the sidewalk inward (towards the building), using available space behind the existing sidewalk. The curb line and vehicle travel lanes will remain the same. All work will occur behind the existing sidewalk.
The city is starting the design work now and anticipates having a preliminary plan to share with downtown business owners and the community in the Spring of 2020. Impacted property owners will receive a survey notice with the next few days.
Additional information about the project can be found on the Old Town Sidewalk Spot Widening page on the city website
