Billy M. Bates is serving his second term on City Council.

He has represented the city as an alternate member for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Region Forward Coalition and MWCOG Human Services Policy Committee.

He was the high school liaison to the city's Environmental and Sustainability Committee while a student at Fairfax High School. He has been a member of the Virginia Young Democrats in both high school and college and has interned with state and federal campaigns.

Bates, a member of George Mason University's powerlifting club, has been involved with the Mason chapter of Best Buddies International, a non-profit global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships and empowerment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The lifelong city resident received his bachelor's degree in physics from Mason; as an undergraduate research intern, he participated in computational physics research. He is pursuing a master's degree in physics at Mason while working as a graduate teaching assistant at the university.
