Official Notice for Upcoming Elections in the City of Fairfax

OFFICIAL PUBLIC NOTICE OF THE APRIL 21, 2026, SPECIAL ELECTION

April 21, 2026, Special Election

The City of Fairfax will be holding a Special Election on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, for Proposed Constitutional Amendment on Redistricting. Voting begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

Voter Registration Deadlines

  • The deadline to register to vote or update voter registration information is Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 5 p.m. for in-person registration and 11:59 p.m. for online registration. Voter registration applications received by mail must be postmarked by the deadline.
  • Qualified persons who will be 18 years of age on or before November 3, 2026, are eligible to register and vote in special election [Code of Virginia § 24.2-403].
  • Citizens may register by mail or in person at any Virginia Voter Registrar’s Office. Applications are also available at public libraries, the United States Postal Service, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Online registration is available through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal: vote.elections.virginia.gov
  • Failure to notify the General Registrar of a change of name or address may result in delays in voting.

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting begins Friday, March 6, 2026, and ends on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

  • Voters may request a by-mail absentee ballot by submitting an Absentee Ballot Application to the Registrar’s Office.
  • The deadline to submit an Absentee Ballot Application is 5 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026. Regardless of the delivery method, the Registrar’s Office must receive the application by the deadline. Voters may submit an application by mail, in person, or online through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal: vote.elections.virginia.gov
  • Voters may return completed by-mail absentee ballots to the ballot drop box located outside the City Hall Atrium entrance facing George Mason Boulevard through 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
  • Voters may vote early in person at the Registrar’s Office during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, April 11 and April 18, 2026, excluding holidays.
  • The last day to vote early in person is Saturday, April 18, 2026.

Provisional Ballots Meeting and Canvass of Results

The Electoral Board will meet at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to begin the provisional ballots meeting. The canvass of results will begin when the provisional ballots meeting is adjourned. The meeting will be held at the Registrar’s Office. The provisional ballots meeting and the canvass of results may adjourn from day to day and may conclude as late as 5 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026 [Code of Virginia § 24.2-671].

February 10, 2026, March 3, 2026, March 10, 2026, April 14, 2026, and April 21, 2026 UNIFORMED-SERVICE AND OVERSEAS CITIZENS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE ABSENTEE

This is an official notice of the Special Elections to be conducted on February 10, 2026, March 3, 2026, March 10, 2026, April 14, 2026, and April 21, 2026. If you are an absent military or overseas citizen eligible to vote in state and local elections, you may register to vote and submit an absentee ballot application electronically for a specific election or any elections up through the next year using the Department of Elections voter registration portal. Please note that a driver’s license or identification card issued by the Virginia DMV is required to complete the process online.  If you do not have a DMV-issued ID, you may also apply by using the federal postcard application (FPCA), available at the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website www.fvap.gov. Detailed instructions are provided by FVAP in the Virginia Voting Assistance Guide. You can submit your FPCA by scanned email attachment to your local general registrar's office, which can be found via the Local Election Office Look Up Tool

If you do not receive your state ballot in time, you may vote using a Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB), available at www.fvap.gov. You can identify all of the state, local offices and, if applicable, ballot measures that, as of this date, are expected to be on the ballot by visiting the Candidate Lists and visit ELECT's Citizen Portal to view your voter registration status.
