Electronic Device Policy

Portable electronic devices are allowed inside the Fairfax City Courthouse, subject to regulations:

  • Portable devices may be used inside courthouse common areas.
  • Portable devices may NOT BE USED in the courtroom for any purpose, unless expressly authorized by the presiding judge.
  • Portable devices may be brought into the courtroom, but must be on silent and remain off and out of sight.
  • Photography, video and audio recording, livestreaming, and/or other audio or video transmission from inside the courthouse is strictly prohibited without written permission of the court.
  • Violations of any of the above policies will result in confiscation of the offending device.

Acceptable Portable Electronic Devices

  • Laptop computers
  • Tablet computers
  • Mobile telephones (including phones with cameras, audio and video recording, and transmission capabilities)
  • E-book readers

Prohibited Electronic Devices

All other cameras, video cameras, video recording equipment and recording devices that are not listed above are prohibited beyond the courthouse entry area. Prohibited photographic and video recording equipment may be permitted with prior written approval from an active 19th judicial circuit or district judge.
