How to Vote by Mail

An application is required to vote by mail.

Apply for an absentee ballot online using the Citizen Portal or submit a physical application in-person or by mail to:

City of Fairfax Office of Elections
          10455 Armstrong St
          Fairfax, VA 22030

View dates and deadlines to request a by-mail ballot.

There are two types of applications:

  • Option 1: Apply for a specific election, or
  • Option 2: Apply to be on the Permanent Absentee List and automatically receive mailed ballots for all elections in which you are eligible to vote.

If you wish to receive by-mail ballots for primary elections, check the party designation box on the application. Under Virginia law, you may only select one party designation box at a time.

There are two methods to return your ballot:
  • By mail, using the provided pre-paid return envelope.
  • In person at Fairfax City Hall or to a drop box. Our secure 24-hour ballot drop box is located by the Atrium entrance closest to George Mason Blvd. On Election Day, all voting precincts will also have a drop box to return your absentee ballot. Please return in the envelope provided.

Important: Absentee Ballots

Do you have an absentee ballot that you requested that was mailed to you? If you come to vote in person instead, return your unvoted by-mail ballot in the return envelope, either:

  • In person when you vote, or
  • By mail

If you choose to vote in person and you do not return your unvoted ballot, you will be offered a provisional ballot which will be reviewed for counting after Election Day.
