The Public Works Department keeps the City of Fairfax running. From the roads residents drive and the water infrastructure beneath them, to the fleet that serves every city department and the environment the community shares. The department's divisions work every day to maintain safe infrastructure, protect natural resources, and deliver reliable services across the city.

The Public Works Department is organized into the following divisions.

Division Description
Administration & Engineering Oversees department budgeting, engineering design review, construction inspections, construction project management, professional services contracts, and dry utilities coordination. Coordinate with VDOT to manage state and federal transportation funding.
Environmental and Sustainability Dedicated to preserving the city's built and natural environment through climate action, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental protection.
Fleet Division Keeps the city's vehicles and equipment running safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively through maintenance, repairs, and sustainable fleet management.
Operations Manages refuse and recycling collection, including yard waste pickup, and provides maintenance to public facilities.
Sign & Signal Manages traffic signals, lane markings, street and traffic signs, and special event road closures throughout the city.
Streets Maintains the city's roadways, sidewalks, right of way, and public grounds, including the City Cemetery. Oversees stormwater and sanitary sewer infrastructure maintenance and leads emergency response for snow, ice, and storm damage.
Stormwater Manages, maintains, and repairs storm drain pipe and sewer structures throughout the city, and regulates and protects the floodplain within city limits.
Transportation Provides a safe, functional, and attractive multi-modal network of sidewalks, bicycle paths, public transportation options, and roadways within the city.
