Officers of Election
Qualifications
- You must be registered to vote in Virginia.
- You must not hold elected office and you must not be an employee or deputy of an elected official.
- You must be willing to swear an oath to uphold the Constitutions of the United States and Virginia.
- If you choose to work the polls on Election Day, you must be available to work for at least 14+ hours on Election Day.
Duties
- Arrive at the polling place at 4:45 a.m. on Election Day or at the scheduled time for Early Voting and Central Absentee Precinct shifts.
- Set up voting equipment and signs
- Process and check in voters, issue ballots, and operate voting equipment
- Tally results, secure machines, and close the polling place
Training
- Training is mandatory for all officers
- Training sessions usually last between 1-2 hours
- Supplemental trainings are available on an "as needed" basis.
Compensation (if desired)
- Chief Officer: $350
- Deputy Chief Officer: $300
- Procedural Specialist: $300
- Electronic Pollbook Specialist: $250
- Regular Election Officer: $250
Early Voting Schedule
- Early Voting begins 45 days prior to every election in Virginia.
- Election Officers may choose to work scheduled shifts during the Early Voting period at City Hall.
Central Absentee Officers
- Check names of voters on lists of absentee applicants
- Record pollbook and voting machine counts
- Tally results, secure machines, and close polling place
Election Schedule
- General Elections are held each year on the first Tuesday in November
- Primary Elections, if held, are usually scheduled for the third Tuesday in June
- Special Elections are scheduled as necessary
Polling Place Assignments
- When possible, Officers are assigned to their polling place
- If no vacancies are available there, you may be assigned to a nearby polling place
- Officers may be asked to work the Central Absentee Precinct (CAP) at City Hall.
