The City of Fairfax has a council/manager form of government. The mayor and six councilmembers are elected every two years on an at-large, non-partisan basis. The current term expires 6/30/2018. The governing body does not have offices in the City Hall, but can be reached through the City Manager's Office at 703.385.7850. The current mayor and councilmembers are listed below.

Please note: at the August 16, 2016, special meeting, the City Council appointed Steven C. Stombres to fill the vacancy in the office of Mayor of the City of Fairfax resulting from the resignation of former Mayor R. Scott Silverthorne.
Mr. Stombres was sworn in on August 17, 2016, and will serve until city voters fill the vacancy by special election and the person elected has qualified as provided by law. The swearing in ceremony is archived on the city website under "special events," and is available on YouTube.
At the August 16, 2016, special meeting, the City Council directed the city attorney to file a petition for an order and writ of election to fill a vacancy in the office of the Mayor for the City of Fairfax.
