Trash & Recycling Cart Open House

Not sure which cart size is the best fit for your household? Come to our Cart Open House on Wednesday, October 22, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at the Sherwood Center.

The City of Fairfax is introducing standardized trash and recycling carts for all households that receive curbside collection. This change will provide a cleaner, safer, and more efficient collection system—with new size options to meet different household needs. The durable, wheeled carts feature attached lids to keep materials dry, prevent litter and pests, and improve worker safety. Standardizing carts will also reduce roadside clutter, increase recycling participation, and ensure consistent service across the city.

At the Open House, residents can see the new carts in person, try them out, and compare the available sizes:

  • 32-gallon cart – a compact option, perfect for households that generate less waste or have limited storage space.
  • 64-gallon cart – the standard size for most households and the default option unless a smaller cart is requested.

City staff will be available to answer questions, help you evaluate which size works best for your home, and guide you through the request process.

Residents who cannot attend can submit their cart size preference through the online survey at fairfaxva.gov/resolve or call 703-385-7837 for assistance.
