Register to Vote

Eligibility

To be eligible to register to vote in Virginia, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a resident of Virginia
  • Be 18 years old* (any person who is 17 years old and will be 18 on or before the day of the next general election shall be permitted to register in advance and vote in any intervening primary or special election.)
  • Have your rights restored if you have been convicted of a felony or judged mentally incapacitated. Learn more about restoration of civil rights.

Any person who is otherwise qualified and is 16 years of age or older, but who will not be 18 years of age on or before the day of the next general election, may preregister to vote.


How to Register

Register or update your registration through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal. You will need your Social Security number and Virginia driver's license. If you do not have a Virginia driver's license or DMV identification card, you will be prompted to print, sign, and mail your Voter Registration Application to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections.

Complete, sign, and submit a Virginia Voter Registration Application to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections. The application is available for download in English, Spanish, Korean, and Vietnamese. To request a form by mail, contact us.

Applications are also available at public libraries, post offices, and DMV locations.

Registration Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by the deadline before each election. Failure to register or update your registration information by the deadline may result in a delay in voting.

  • 10 days before any general or primary election
  • 6 days before a special election called by the Governor

Manage Your Registration

Update Your Registration

Update your information any time your registration details change. Failure to do so may cause a delay in voting. Submit a new Voter Registration Application to your local registrar's office in person or by mail, or update online through the Virginia Department of Elections portal.

Cancel Your Registration

If you no longer reside in Virginia or wish to cancel your registration for any other reason, complete and sign the Request to Cancel Voter Registration form and submit it to your local Office of Voter Registration and Elections.


Please note: Voter Registration Applications and Request to Cancel Voter Registration forms require a wet signature to be considered valid. Electronic signatures are not accepted.
