Rogue Art Project to Provide Adaptive Glasses for Colorblind Guests
Published on September 19, 2025
The Rogue Art Project has partnered with EnChroma on "Illuminating Art," an initiative to allow colorblind individuals to fully experience art exhibitions. Specialized glasses are available to patrons during gallery visits at the Stacy C. Sherwood Center in Fairfax, Virginia, where The Rogue Art Project's latest exhibition "Colorburst" is on display through Dec. 19.
Color blindness, which affects approximately 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women, can limit a person's ability to perceive the color nuances that are central to artistic expression. The specialized glasses work by filtering specific wavelengths of light, which increases the contrast between colors and allows individuals with common forms of color blindness to see a wider range of hues. The EnChroma lenses are now a permanent offering and were acquired to coincide with both Colorblindness Awareness Month in September and the opening of "Colorburst."
Debra Wright, curator of The Rogue Art Project, said, "We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with art on a profound level. This project will unlock a richer viewing experience, foster inclusivity, and enhance the cultural experience for a currently underserved community." Wright is an accomplished found object, installation and avant-garde artist who works with artists and venues to promote public art, diversity and equity for marginalized artists and communities.
"Colorburst" showcases artistic creations across all genres, unified by their emphasis on bold and vibrant colors as the primary thematic element. This carefully curated exhibition features powerful interpretations of color, realized through a diverse array of materials such as paints, pastels, colored pencils and found objects. Spanning the spectrum from realism to abstraction, each work evokes a profound emotional response — be it joy, sadness, laughter or wonder — through its masterful application of color.
A free opening reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, at the Stacy Sherwood Center located at 3740 Blenheim Blvd. "Colorburst" is available to view during the center's regular hours: 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit is on display in a multipurpose space.
The Stacy C. Sherwood Center is a thriving, community space that hosts an array of events and activities daily. We suggest art patrons phone ahead at 703-385-1695 to ensure the main performance area will be accessible for viewing during operational hours as other commitments may make this area inaccessible.
