Updated program includes more size options and opt-out option

Fairfax City is enhancing its solid waste collection program with the introduction of new trash and recycling carts beginning January 2026. This citywide initiative aims to improve collection efficiency, safety, and service quality for residents.

In response to community feedback, the city has expanded the program to provide even greater flexibility. In addition to the standard 64-gallon carts, residents can now request smaller 32-gallon carts for trash, recycling, or both. Residents who prefer not to receive new carts may opt out of the program entirely.

The new wheeled, lidded carts are designed to improve curbside collection across the community by reducing windblown litter, protecting recyclables from rain and snow, and improving safety for collection crews. Standardizing carts citywide will also streamline collection routes, reduce maintenance needs, and help ensure the continued delivery of efficient, reliable service.

By default, residents who receive curbside collection will receive standard 64-gallon trash and recycling carts in January. To request smaller carts, opt out, or update a previous submission, residents can complete the “Trash and Recycling Cart Alternative Size & Opt-Out Request Form” at fairfaxva.gov/resolve. All requests must be submitted by Nov. 3.

Residents who have already submitted a size request but would like to change their selection—or opt out entirely—may simply resubmit the form. The most recent submission will be used. If no form is submitted, households will automatically receive the standard 64-gallon trash and recycling carts.

Carts will be delivered in January 2026 to all single-family homes, townhomes, and duplexes that receive city curbside collection. Residents do not need to be home to receive their new carts. The city will also offer a one-time take-back program to collect and recycle old or unwanted containers, with additional details to be mailed to households later this fall.

The cart rollout reflects Fairfax City’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement. By investing in standardized, durable carts, the city is reducing waste, improving recycling outcomes, and supporting a cleaner, safer community for all residents.
