This project will construct improvements to the Warwick Ave./Fairfax Blvd./McLean Ave. intersection. The City evaluated a number of preliminary concepts to improve traffic flow on Fairfax Blvd and improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility at this intersection while preserving commercial property access and minimizing negative impacts to residential neighborhoods.
The recommended alternative realigns the intersection to remove two of the intersection approaches (McLean Ave to the north of Fairfax Blvd and Warwick Ave to the south of Fairfax Blvd). This improvement will reduce pedestrian crossing distances and reduce the number of intersection conflict points, thus making the intersection safer for both motorists and pedestrians. The proposed alternative would also add a new traffic signal at Farr Avenue to allow neighborhood traffic south of Fairfax Blvd access to a signal to make left turns onto Fairfax Blvd.
The City hosted a public input meeting(PDF, 5MB) on May 24, 2018 to present a number of preliminary concepts and receive feedback from the public. The recommended concept was developed based on the public input. Staff presented the recommended concept(PDF, 8MB) to the City Council at the June 26, 2018 work session(PDF, 5MB) and received Council approval(PDF, 55KB) to submit this concept to VDOT as part of the City’s application for SmartScale funding.
