Child Care Information

Dental Clinic Fee Reduction Program

City of Fairfax residents may request a reduction for the dental clinic cost.  To apply for the program a "Request for Fee Reduction" application form and supporting documentation must be submitted a minimum of three weeks in advance.  All requests will be evaluated based on overall household income size relative to the financial assistance eligibility scale which is included with the application.

Emergency food assistance information for Fairfax City residents. This section provides information about SNAP benefits and the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) program during the federal shutdown.

Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) Program

VENA is an emergency food assistance program created by the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide support to SNAP households during the federal shutdown. This program is available to Fairfax City residents who meet the eligibility requirements.

Key Information

  • SNAP benefits will not be issued in November
  • To fill the gap, Virginia has started VENA (Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance)
  • There is no application process for VENA. Benefits will be issued weekly only to people eligible for SNAP as of October 29, 2025
  • Emergency food assistance under VENA will be added to existing SNAP EBT cards starting November 3
  • To check your balance before you shop, call 1-866-281-2448 and enter the 16-digit number on your card

VENA Benefit Schedule

VENA will be funded on a weekly basis instead of monthly. Benefits will be issued weekly to people eligible for SNAP as of October 29, 2025:

Benefit Issuance Normal issuance is 1st of the month Normal issuance is 4th of the month Normal issuance is 7th of the month
VENA Week 1 25% of allotment on Nov. 3rd 25% of allotment on Nov. 5th 25% of allotment on Nov. 7th

Program Details

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) administers VENA directly. Learn more about VENA from VDSS.

Eligibility: You must have been approved for SNAP before October 29, 2025 to participate in VENA. New SNAP applications and renewals continue to be accepted and processed, but benefits cannot be issued until the federal government reopens.

SNAP Program Information

Current Status

  • October Benefits: October SNAP benefits were distributed as expected and are not affected by the federal shutdown
  • November Benefits: Regular SNAP benefits cannot be issued during the federal shutdown; VENA provides temporary assistance
  • Retroactive Benefits: It is unclear whether benefits will be issued retroactively once the shutdown ends

Other Assistance Programs

The following programs are currently not affected by the federal shutdown:

  • Child Care Assistance and Referral (CCAR)
  • Medical Assistance (Medicaid)

Note: We do not have updated guidance from the state about impacts to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits.

Since SNAP is funded at the federal level and supervised by the state, Fairfax County cannot control or change when SNAP funding will be released.
