Get hands-on experience to tackle invasive plants! Join the city's Stewardship Coordinator for a free basic training to learn how to identify, monitor, and remove invasive plants commonly found in yards and parks.
This workshop is in-person and will take place at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center (3740 Blenheim Blvd) with a field session in nearby Van Dyck Park. Doors open at 8:45 a.m.
Attendees should dress appropriately for the outdoors, including sturdy shoes, long pants and socks, and insect repellent. A waiver will be provided for anyone interested in participating in the field session (using tools, going off-trail).
Fairfax City Forest Rescues is a city-wide volunteer program that aims to restore the health of Fairfax's urban forest through invasive removal and native restoration plantings.
Attendees who complete this training have the option to apply to become a Certified Forest Rescuer with the additional completion of 4 volunteer hours. Once certified, Forest Rescuers are permitted to work independently in city parks to restore habitat areas in partnership with urban forestry staff.
