News Release: In Custody Death
CITY OF FAIRFAX — On December 14, 2025, at approximately 8:05 p.m., officers responded to the Shell Gas Station located at the 11200 block of Fairfax Boulevard for the report of a single-vehicle crash involving a 66-year-old man. Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and evaluated the man, who refused any further medical treatment. Preliminary information suggests that the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and was later taken into custody.
The man was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where a warrant was obtained for driving under the influence of alcohol. At the jail, the man reported feeling ill and was transported to an area hospital, where it was discovered he was suffering a medical emergency. Life-saving measures were taken; however, the man later died at the hospital.
As is protocol in a critical incident involving the death of a prisoner, the investigation is being conducted by the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), comprised of investigators from regional law enforcement agencies, independent of the City of Fairfax Police Department. An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner who will determine the cause and manner of death. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for review.
At this time, the man’s identity is being withheld due to the active investigation.
On behalf of the department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.
