Virginia 811, commonly known as Miss Utility, is a nonprofit "call before you dig" service created by the state's utility companies to mark underground lines before excavation work begins.

- When to Contact: At least three working days before any digging project
- Cost: Free — but skipping this step could make you liable for repair costs if you damage a utility line
- What's Covered: Public utility lines only; private lines (such as the pipe from your water meter to your house) are not marked
