Project Background

Jermantown Road is a two-lane road with a center two-way left-turn lane that provides local access to residential, school and commercial locations, and connections to Fairfax County. Current conditions are challenging for some users, and accommodating future growth and changes will require improvements.

The Jermantown Road corridor, a 0.8-mile segment between I-66 and Route 50, was identified for multimodal improvements by city planners. The project was adopted into the fiscal year 2018 Two-Year Transportation Program. Goals for the project include:

  • Improve current roadway operations for all travelers.
  • Plan for future demand and travel needs.
  • Maintain connections to Fairfax County.
  • Maintain and improve transit operations.
  • Increase pedestrian and bicycle safety and connectivity.

Existing Challenges

  • Rear-end and angle crashes (most severe type of crash)
  • Traffic operations and congestion
    • Average annual daily traffic: 14,000 vehicles
    • Peak hour congestion
  • Access management
    • Closely spaced driveway entrances
    • Signalized intersections with closely offset, unsignalized intersections
  • Multimodal access
    • Uncontrolled pedestrian crossings
    • Limited bicycle facilities
    • Limited transit (bus) amenities

Project Plan

  • Replace the two-way left turn lane with median and individual left turn lanes where possible
  • Optimize signal timing along the corridor
  • Convert full access driveways to right-in/right-out configuration at Comfort Inn entrance, H-Mart north entrance, and the Gainsborough Court south entrance
  • Shift the Gainsborough Court north entrance to align with Orchard Street to create a four-leg signalized intersection
  • Shift the traffic signal at the H-Mart north entrance north to align with Kutner Park and 3900 Jermantown Rd.
  • Construct a continuous 10-foot shared use path along the east side of Jermantown Road
  • Add rapid flashing beacons at the pedestrian crossings at Katherine Johnson Middle School, Providence Elementary School, and at Carol Street
  • Construct a mid-crossing pedestrian island at Carol Street
  • Add pedestrian-scale lighting throughout the corridor
  • Upgrade CUE and Metro bus stops with benches, bus shelters, bike racks, and trash receptables
  • Plant 100+ new trees and shrubs throughout the corridor
