Jermantown Road Corridor Improvements

Project Background

Jermantown Road is a two lane road with a center two-way left turn lane. Jermantown Road provides key local access (residential, school, & commercial locations) and connections to Fairfax County. Current conditions are challenging for some users, and accommodating future growth and changes will require improvements to help the city:

  • Improve current roadway operations for all travelers
  • Plan for future demand and travel needs
  • Maintain connections to the county
  • Maintain and improve transit operations
  • Increase pedestrian and bicycle safety and connectivity

The city engaged a consulting engineer in 2018 to develop a concept plan for the roadway. The City developed two concepts that were brought to the public(PDF, 8MB) for discussion and feedback. The two concepts developed were:

  1. Boulevard Option, which would widen Jermantown Road to 4 lanes with a median and
  2. the Spot Improvement Option, which would add a southbound right turn lane south of Orchard Street, a northbound thru lane north of Orchard Street, a potential traffic circle at Orchard Street and new roadway crossings (exact technology to be determined) at the two schools.

Both options included a shared use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the east side of the roadway.

After further traffic analysis and public input the City advanced the Spot Improvement Option(PDF, 15MB) for funding consideration. This option would:

  • Improve traffic operations, especially during the AM
  • Improve ingress and egress for residential and commercial driveways
  • Improve transit operations
  • Minimize impacts to right of way and utilities
  • Improve bicycle and pedestrian movement

Project Status

After completion of the concept plan, the City applied for, and was awarded, $21M in funding for this project from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. The staff team is currently in the design phase that will include the recommended components from the conceptual planning process. Staff held a public outreach to solicit stakeholder advisory for this project.
