Join acclaimed Irish writer Colm Tóibín for the 2026 Cheuse Anniversary Lecture of Ideas, "Stories of Sanctuary." Drawing on his novel The Magician — a portrait of German writer Thomas Mann and his escape from Europe during World War II — Tóibín explores stories of refuge and the unlikely forces that keep ideas alive across borders. A conversation with German writer and interviewer Malte Herwig follows.
