Expanded Deployment of AEDs

CITY OF FAIRFAX — Effective July 23, 2026, the Police Department is expanding the deployment of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all operational vehicles, enhancing our ability to provide immediate, lifesaving assistance during cardiac emergencies.

Previously, AEDs were available in a limited number of police vehicles.  Through this initiative, every operational vehicle is now equipped with an AED, ensuring officers have immediate access to lifesaving equipment and can begin critical care as quickly as possible anywhere in the City

All police officers receive routine training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the proper use of AEDs.  These devices are designed to quickly assess a person’s heart rhythm and, when appropriate, deliver a lifesaving electrical shock while providing clear voice instructions to guide responders through the process.

While emergency medical care is provided primarily by Fire and EMS, equipping police vehicles with an AED increases the likelihood that lifesaving equipment can arrive quickly during a cardiac emergency.  This initiative reflects our commitment to enhancing public safety through emergency response and improving service to those who live, work, and visit the City of Fairfax.
