The project will construct a new biking and walking connection between Route 29 and Park Road in the Westmore neighborhood. The path and landscaping improvements will be installed in the grassy area owned by the city, adjacent to the Fairfax Junction shopping center parking lot.

Fern Street project detail

This connection was recommended in the Kamp Washington Small Area Plan, which was approved by City Council on Oct. 25, 2022. The small area plan was the product of a yearlong effort to develop specific recommendations for land uses, a street network, public amenities, and other related elements in the Kamp Washington Activity Center.

On Sept. 12, 2023, City Council unanimously approved to adopt a resolution to endorse the city’s FY24 Transportation Alternatives Applications for the Chain Bridge Road Shared Use Path and the Fern Street Neighborhood Connection. View the public hearing.

Priority Project

The Fern Street Neighborhood Connection project is included in the city’s FY2024-25 Two-Year Transportation Program, adopted by City Council on June 13, 2023. The projects in the program are eligible for regional, state, and federal funding consideration over the next 2-10 years. The projects recommended in the program balance local and regional transportation needs, improve connectivity, and facilitate livability.

Open House

The city  held an open house to discuss the type of path, landscaping, and other features with interested residents from 5-7 p.m. on July 19, 2023.
