The city is constructing new sidewalks, curb and gutter, and drainage improvements on First Street, Second Street, and Oak Street to enhance pedestrian safety and manage stormwater in this evolving neighborhood. These improvements were requested by residents through the Residential New Concrete Sidewalk Program and are part of the city's ongoing commitment to creating a more walkable community.

Project Scope

First Street: Sidewalks and curb and gutter on the north side of First Street between Hallman Street and Oak Street.

Second Street: Sidewalks and curb and gutter on the south side of Second Street between Walnut Street and Oak Street.

Oak Street: 750 linear feet of 5-foot sidewalk and drainage improvements on the west side of Oak Street between Main Street and 3934 Oak Street (just north of Second Street).

Project Background

Sidewalks improve pedestrian safety by providing dedicated space for walking, while curb and gutter contain stormwater runoff to the roadway and prevent it from flowing onto private property. These projects meet all of the city's sidewalk criteria, including safety needs, demand, resident support, and equity benefits.

In recent years, the city has experienced significant redevelopment along this corridor, including the completion of Mount Vineyard Flats, Boulevard VI at the site of the former Paul VI school, and redevelopment of the former Breezeway Motel site and apartments on Cedar Avenue. These infrastructure improvements will support the area's continued growth and enhance connectivity for residents and visitors.
