The Gateway Regional Park Renovation project transforms the existing park into a resilient, environmentally focused public open space that enhances both ecological function and visitor experience. The renovation also improves accessibility and creates engaging recreational and educational experiences while encouraging stewardship of the park's natural resources.
Improvements include:
As part of the construction process, approximately 80 trees will be removed beginning around July 1, 2026. This project is by-right and has completed the city's site plan approval process.
Construction is underway. The project is being completed by Avon Corporation.
Gateway Regional Park is managed by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA). The renovation supports regional flood mitigation efforts by increasing stormwater retention capacity and strengthening the site's overall ecological resilience, with enhancements to wildlife habitat through native planting strategies, invasive species management, and ecological restoration throughout the park.
