What is Invasive Species Awareness Week?

National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW) is an international event dedicated to raising awareness about invasive species, the threats they pose, and the actions that can be taken to prevent their spread.

The city will celebrate National Invasive Species Awareness Week with a proclamation by Mayor Catherine S. Read at the City Council Regular Meeting on February 24, 2026.

How to Participate

Invasive Species Awareness Week will kick off the city's spring volunteer season, with public events from the last weekend of the month through the end of May.

All public events are free to join with advance registration. Find upcoming events on the City Calendar (filter 'Volunteer Events').

What is an Invasive Species?

A non-native invasive species is any species intentionally or accidentally introduced to an area outside its native ecosystem and which causes harm to human health, the economy, or the environment as it spreads.

Common invasive species in the City of Fairfax include English ivy, callery pear, spotted lanternfly, emerald ash borer, and house sparrows.
