To protect life and property through education, code enforcement, fire and hazard investigations, and an adaptable Community Risk Reduction program.

New Construction

What We Do:

• Review building plans for compliance with applicable building codes and regulations.
• Issue residential and commercial construction permits.
• Inspect new construction, additions, renovations, and major repairs to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.

   

Codes & Fees:

• Construction codes are established by the state and cannot be amended or modified by local jurisdictions.
• Residential: $0.11 per square foot
• Commercial: $0.17 per square foot
• Repairs and Alterations: $93.60 plus 1% of project cost over $1,000

Fire Marshal’s Office

What We Do:

• Enforce the Statewide Fire Prevention Code.
• Inspect fire alarm and sprinkler systems during installation, testing, and maintenance.
• Investigate fires, explosions, and hazardous materials incidents.
• Provide fire safety education and outreach.
• Conduct inspections of high-risk facilities, including petroleum terminals.

   

About the Fire Code:

• Established by the state; local governments may adopt more restrictive requirements.
• Does not modify construction materials or methods regulated by the building code.
• Applies primarily to commercial and industrial facilities, as well as common areas of multi-family buildings.

Property Maintenance

What We Do:

• Respond to tenant complaints regarding housing conditions.
• Conduct neighborhood surveys and proactive inspections.
• Manage rental occupancy permits.
• Inspect blighted properties and work with property owners to address concerns.
• Refer potential ordinance violations to the appropriate agencies.

   

Code Compliance & Resident Support:

• Local enforcement of the Property Maintenance Code is optional; however, tenant complaints must be investigated.
• Exterior property issues, such as grass, weeds, and inoperable vehicles, are addressed through City Code enforcement or referred to the appropriate agency.
• City funding is available to assist homeowners with critical repairs. Assistance is secured by a lien to help preserve housing and prevent displacement.
