Old Town Fairfax Small Area Plan
The Old Town Fairfax Small Area Plan(PDF, 11MB) was the product of a nearly year-long effort to develop specific recommendations for this Activity Center’s land uses, street network, public amenities, and other related elements. This Small Area Plan was approved by the City Council at their June 23, 2020 meeting and is accompanied by appendices that provide further insight to the Plan’s development. Implementation of the Small Area Plan’s recommendations may be tracked in the Old Town Fairfax Small Area Plan Implementation Guide(PDF, 535KB), which will be updated with the recommendations’ latest statuses twice a year.

Old Town Key Recommendations
- Re-imagining Old Town as a cultural destination
- Injecting color into the historic downtown
- Creating a new arts walk
- Downtown as a pedestrian precinct
- Encouraging supporting land uses in a mixed-use activity center
- "The Spine" - A new shared-use path connecting the city
The approved plan for Old Town highlights and expands upon its unique historical downtown and cultural assets, making recommendations to expand its appeal as a cultural destination, adding color to highlight unique buildings, and introducing an arts walk. Improving the pedestrian experience through Old Town is another key focus, as is encouraging a balanced mix of uses and connecting pedestrians and bicyclists to both George Mason University and Northfax via a trail to be implemented along University Drive.
