Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Thank you for your partnership as we begin the construction phase of the Blenheim Boulevard Multimodal Improvements Project. This project is the culmination of extensive planning to improve the safety, look, and function of the corridor for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders.
Q: What is being constructed?
A: This project is redesigning Blenheim Boulevard between Layton Hall Drive and Ridge Avenue. The project will maintain one travel lane in each direction and add the following major improvements:
- A two-way, 10-foot-wide cycle track on the north side of the road
- 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the road
- Two multimodal hubs with upgraded bus shelters, bikeshare stations and bike racks
- A new roundabout at the Ridge Avenue intersection
- New left-turn lanes at Daniels Run Elementary, Sherwood Center, and Great Oaks Dr.
- An outdoor classroom and community amphitheater outside Fairfax High School
- Pedestrian-scale lighting and landscaping
For more information about the project and the improvements you can expect when it is complete, visit fairfaxva.gov and search for Blenheim Blvd Multimodal Improvements.
Q: When does construction start and how long will it last?
A: Construction will begin on or after July 6, 2026, and will last approximately two years. The construction timeline will be updated as the project progresses.
Q: How will construction be phased?
A: Construction will start on the south side of the roadway (the Daniels Run side) for placement of new asphalt. Construction will then transfer to the north side for installation of curb, gutter, and other improvements, and then will transfer back to the south side. When construction is occurring on the south side, traffic will shift to the north side, and vice versa.
Q: Will Blenheim Boulevard be closed?
A: We anticipate that the road will remain open throughout construction. Drivers should expect periodic lane closures, lane shifting, and temporary detours throughout the construction period, particularly during off-peak hours. Walkers should expect some sidewalk closures. Detour routes and crossings will be clearly marked.
Q: Will CUE routes still operate on Blenheim Boulevard?
A: Yes, bus service will continue. However, some bus stops may be temporarily relocated short distances to protect passenger safety. Look for signage at your usual stop for real-time adjustments.
Q: How will this affect getting to Fairfax High School or Daniels Run Elementary?
A: We are working closely with the City of Fairfax Schools to minimize impacts during drop-off and pick-up hours. While school traffic will be maintained, please plan for potential delays along the corridor.
Q: What are the contractor's working hours?
A: : Work in the roadway will occur Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., but work may occur outside of the roadway between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. If specialized operations require night or weekend work, notice will be posted on the project website and posted along the corridor in advance.
Q: Will I have access to my driveway and side streets?
A: Yes. Access to all homes, local side streets, and businesses will be maintained. If we need to briefly block a driveway, the crew will coordinate with you directly beforehand.
Q: How will this overlap with other local construction such as the Willard-Sherwood project?
A: We are actively coordinating timelines with the nearby Willard-Sherwood Health and Community Center project and the upcoming bridge deck rehabilitation work near Ridge Ave to maintain traffic flow.
Q: Where will the contractor stage and store equipment?
A: The contractor is evaluating various off-site locations for equipment storage and staging. This will not occur in residential neighborhoods.
