OFFICIAL PUBLIC NOTICE OF THE NOVEMBER 3, 2026, GENERAL AND SPECIAL ELECTIONS
November 3, 2026, General and Special Elections
The City of Fairfax will be holding General and Special Elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, for the offices of the United States Senate, United States House of Representatives (11th District), Fairfax City Mayor, Fairfax City Council, Fairfax City School Board, Statewide Proposed Constitutional Amendments, and Fairfax City Retail Sales Tax Referendum. Voting begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.
Voter Registration Deadlines
- The deadline to register or update voter registration information is Friday, October 23, 2026, at 5 p.m. for in person registration and 11:59 p.m. for online registration. Voter registration applications received by mail must be postmarked by the deadline.
- Qualified persons who will be 18 years of age on or before November 3, 2026, are eligible to register and vote in intervening primary or special election [Code of Virginia § 24.2-403].
- Citizens may register in person at any Virginia Voter Registrar’s Office. Applications are also available at public libraries, the United States Postal Service, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
- Failure to notify the General Registrar of a change of registration information may result in delays in voting.
Absentee Voting
Absentee voting begins Friday, September 18, 2026, and ends on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
- The deadline to submit an absentee ballot application requesting a by-mail ballot is 5 p.m. of Friday, October 23, 2026, regardless of the delivery method.
- Voters may submit an application by mail, in person, or online through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal: vote.elections.virginia.gov
- Voters may return voted absentee ballots to the ballot drop box located outside the City Hall Atrium entrance facing George Mason Boulevard through 7 p.m. of Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
- Voters may vote early in person at Fairfax City Hall during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays.
- Early voting is also available on two Saturdays, October 24 and October 31, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on two Sundays, October 18 and October 25, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- The last day to vote early in person is Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Provisional Ballots Meeting and Canvass of Results
The Electoral Board will meet at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, to begin the provisional ballots meeting. The canvass of results will begin when the provisional ballots meeting is adjourned. The meeting will be held at the Registrar’s Office. The provisional ballots meeting and the canvass of results may adjourn from day to day and may conclude as late as 5 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2026 [Code of Virginia § 24.2-671].
