The South Street Extension project will extend South Street between University Drive and Chain Bridge Road and install new traffic signals at the intersections with both Chain Bridge Road and University Drive. This connection will enhance pedestrian connectivity by creating smaller blocks and spread vehicular traffic across major intersections in Old Town, improving circulation throughout the downtown area.
The extended street will connect directly to the Fairfax County Judicial Complex, which is being redeveloped. As part of that redevelopment, the main entrance to the complex will be relocated to align with the new extension, enabling greater integration between city and county street networks.
This project was recommended in the city's Multimodal Transportation Plan and Old Town Fairfax Small Area Plan, and subsequently adopted into the Two-Year Transportation Program, which is the city's action list of projects to pursue for external transportation funding. The project was identified as a priority to further the mobility goals set forth in the Comprehensive Plan, advancing the city's goals of improving walkability, reducing traffic congestion at key intersections, and transforming underutilized parking areas into active, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.
The building currently housing the Humane Society of Fairfax County will be removed to make way for the new connection. The city is working with impacted property owners to mitigate impacts to the extent possible.
